Many great ships were built at the Armstrong and Whitworth’s shipyard at Low Walker
but perhaps the most unusual was the vessel known as the ‘Baikal’. It was ordered

Great though this journey be, it is eclipsed many times over by the journey the Son of God made, when He left the glory of Heaven to be born at Bethlehem and die for sinners on the cross at Jerusalem. This journey cannot be measured in miles. It’s measured in heartbeats of Divine love! The Bible says, ‘The Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world’ and ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’.
In the late 1920s it was proposed to build a road bridge across the mouth of the river from South Shields to North Shields, and Borough engineer, J. The main obstacle standing in the way of this ambitious construction was that ships passing beneath the bridge would need a clearance of at least 57 metres. This would require approach roads of 1.2 miles!
The Bible tells us that there is a massive obstacle standing in the way of people
getting to heaven. It is the great issue of SIN. “And there shall in no wise enter
