The Gospel through a look at Newcastle United
When it was announced that England was to host the 1966 World Cup, the Newcastle and Sunderland grounds were chosen as venues, on the understanding that major upgrading was undertaken. Newcastle were prepared to make the necessary changes but in order to protect their capital investment, they insisted that the Council give the club a long term lease on the ground. Unfortunately, the Council and the club could not agree, and in August 1964, it was confirmed that St James’ would not be used for any of the World Cup games. This was a tremendous loss for both city and club!
The Bible informs us that it is possible to suffer a greater loss than this. The Lord Jesus said, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” – Matthew 16:26.

won the trophy three times. In 1951 they beat Blackpool 2-
The Bible makes it clear that heaven is only open to those who are saved: that is, those whose sins have been forgiven; those who have been ‘born again’ by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. “Verily, verily I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
– John 3:3
Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you”
JOHN 14:2
